The Sadin Institute on Law & Public Policy
The Advocacy Training Center is dedicated to providing the most comprehensive, up-to-date legal information on all areas of Elder Law. Several Guardianship (Article 81) trainings are regularly scheduled each semester and attended by attorneys, new and old to the field, social workers, social service providers, geriatric care managers, guardians and other professionals in the field of aging and advocacy.
SPRING 2010 COURSE OFFERINGS
Article 81 - Guardianship Training
This is the 7-hour training approved by the Office of Court Administration (OCA) designed for professionals (ie: guardians, court evaluators, counsel for the AIP, petitioner's attorneys)
- ADVANCE DIRECTIVES
This course will provide students with an in-depth look at living wills, the New York State Health Care Proxy Law and Power of Attorney Law. A special emphasis will be placed on the new Power of Attorney and its implications. This course is for non-attorney professionals. (No CLE credits will be provided for this training)

- MEDICAID FAIR HEARINGS
Learn how to handle Medicaid fair hearings and other ways to resolve Medicaid problems. Topics covered include: exercising due process rights, preparing for the hearing and advocating at a conference or fair hearing. (* CLE credits are pending)

- ELDER ABUSE AND THE LAW: WHAT PROFESSIONALS SHOULD KNOW
This training covers the legal aspects of Elder Abuse and will focus on the Legal interventions available such as: power of attorney, representative payee, guardianship, orders of protection and sections of the penal law. How to make a referral to Adult Protective Services and law enforcement agencies and client confidentiality will also be discussed. (* CLE credits are pending)

- CASE MANAGEMENT AND LEGAL LIABILITY
This training focuses on the complexity of providing case management services to vulnerable populations in today's litigious society. Legal principles and theories of liability will be discussed as well as capacity issues, the personal injury case and risk management techniques. (No CLE credits will be provided for this training)

TRAINING LOCATION : Brookdale Campus of Hunter College , 425 East 25 th Street , 13th Floor North Bldg. Entrance located on 25 h Street between 1 st Avenue and the FDR Drive .
FEE : $80 per attendee per class. Partial scholarships are available for financial hardship cases only. Please email your request to Milagro Ruiz at miruiz@hunter.cuny.edu and include a detailed reason for your request for a partial scholarship. All requests must be received at least one week before the training date; phone calls will not be accepted. You will be notified of the decision before the training.

NYS Continuining Legal Education (PENDING)
The Sadin Institute on Law & Public Policy of the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging & Longevity of Hunter College (CUNY) has applied to the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board to be an accredited provider of Continuining Legal Education (CLE) in New York State. Each course will provide transitional or non-transitional CLE credits to qualifying attorneys in New York State. Please contact raquel.romanick@hunter.cuny.edu for details.
